No one plans to hit rock bottom. But somehow, we all get there.
Maybe it begins with betrayal—the kind that cuts deep because it comes from someone you trusted. Or perhaps it’s something even harder: realizing you’re the one who caused the pain. Sometimes it’s the slow ache of loneliness that creeps in without warning. Or the heartbreak of walking with someone you love to the very end of their life. And for many, it’s the unrelenting struggle with sin.
These moments leave us fragile. They strip away our illusions of control and remind us just how much we need Jesus. In the valley, when our strength is gone and our hearts are broken, this is where God promises to be near.
The Lord says,
“I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit—to revive the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite.” (Isaiah 57:15)
Not when we’ve cleaned ourselves up. Not after we’ve fixed everything. But right there, in the lowest places, He is present.
Pastor Ray Ortlund shared on Haven Today how a season of deep sorrow opened his heart to a closeness with Christ he hadn’t experienced before. That rings true for so many of us. It is often in the valley, not on the mountaintop, where we see God most clearly—where His grace becomes more than an idea and transforms into our daily bread.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
The God of Scripture is not distant or indifferent. He is the One who carries His people when they are too weak to stand. He doesn’t merely sit in the darkness beside us—He begins to lift us out of it in His perfect time.
“He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” (Psalm 40:2)
Even on the heaviest days, when the shadows feel endless and the way forward is unclear, God is there. Steady. Sovereign. Unchanging. He may not remove the hardship immediately, but He promises to be with us through it, using even suffering to shape us into the likeness of Christ.
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4)
This is not shallow optimism. It’s the rugged hope found in the Gospel: that in Christ, we are never forgotten, never abandoned, and never too far gone. His love is not passive. It moves toward sinners and sufferers. It heals. It restores. It redeems.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
Maybe the valley you’re walking through today isn’t the end of your story.
Maybe it’s the very place where redemption begins—where the grace of God meets you, holds you fast, and leads you home.
